IX. The Creed – Crucifixion
Jesus is on the cross, with His blood flowing from His pierced side into the Communion Chalice.
Above the cross, the letters INRI, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews,” the Latin initials for the title written by the Pilate and placed on the cross at his direction.
The branch of thorns reaching upward to Jesus and the marks of the nails in His hands adds to the agony of the crucifixion.
The final words of Jesus Himself, from the cross, “Father, into Thy hands I commit my spirit,” show His perfect obedience to His heavenly Father, fulfilling the law in our stead, and once and for all offering up Himself for our sins.
